Teacher Strategies for Classroom Management in a One-to-One Lesson

Before the Lesson
  • Check to make sure that all students’ accounts are active; be aware of any students who may have restricted access for some reason.
  • Know student login information. Be mindful of special naming situations.
  • Test sites and programs before the lesson to help you anticipate problems. Remember to run the check on a student device. Some settings and privileges are set differently on a teacher machine.

During the Lesson
  • Remind students of AUP, citizenship, and safety expectations.
  • Have students use their assigned computer or the same computer whenever possible.
  • Follow established rules and procedures.
  • Be consistent with expectations and consequences.
  • Move around the room to offer additional instruction/direction, and to monitor student work, but do not stay too long at any one workstation. There is no substitute for a mobile, vigilant teacher.
  • If available, use a projection system for instruction. Students will be able to see the instructor’s computer and follow directions visually.
  • Use common vocabulary.
  • Have student's close computer to a 45 degree angle when instructions are given or attention is needed.

After the Lesson
  • Turn in any necessary technology work orders.
  • Be consistent with follow up feedback and grading.
  • Note any changes or corrections needed before the next class.
